Doing research for an assignment? Before you Google, check out the PDHS Library’s resources:
Search the library’s online catalogue for books held at PDHS and other school libraries throughout CCRSB. If a book you need is available from another school, ask Ms. Calder to request it on your behalf.
Tip: The catalogue will not auto-correct spelling, so ensure everything’s spelled correctly when you search for a book.
A collection of full text e-books on the topics of science, literature, and history. You can browse topics using the Table of Contents for each book, or search using keywords. This resource is a great starting point for research projects.
EBSCOhost provides access to several academic research databases, which are large, electronic collections of periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers), encyclopedias, and reference books. One search will scan hundreds of thousands of recent, reliable, full-text articles and images on a wide variety of topics. Students can access the following databases at school and home (see Ms. Calder for the username and password):
Advanced Placement Source – designed for high school students, this is ideal for general research as it contains more than 5,550 full-text academic journals and magazines.
Canadian Points of View – provides balanced information on hundreds of current controversial issues. For each topic there is an overview, point, counterpoint, a Critical Thinking Guide, and links to thousands of related articles.
Canadian Reference Center -ideal for projects with a Canadian focus, this database consists of leading Canadian magazines, newspapers, newswires and reference books.
Canadian Student Research Center & Student Research Center – designed for students in grades 6-12. Browse databases by topic heading, make use of an online dictionary and encyclopedia, and explore top searches of the day.
GreenFILE – covers all aspects of human impact to the environment. It consists of scholarly, government and general-interest titles.
History Reference Center – the world’s most comprehensive full text history reference database designed for secondary schools.
Literary Reference Center – provides users with a broad spectrum of information on thousands of authors and their works across literary disciplines and timeframes.
Science Reference Center – provides easy access to a multitude of full text science-oriented content.
